You don't have to leave the car behind to travel by train. There are lots of trains across Europe where you drive your car on, leave it and head for a carriage. At the other end you drive the car off and have it for your holiday. These are popular in France, but a friend took one from Italy through Switzerland, Germany and in to Holland last year. A great jouney with the car at both ends.

Budget flights (3 above) from easyJet and Ryanair are fine if you are travelling with no hold luggage. Bear in mind that these airlines do not include anything other than a seat and one small carry on bag in the fare. If you are carrying luggage, you need to pay both for the bag to go into the hold AND to check it in at the airport ! Those with bags to check should compare the cost of budget airlines with full service carriers who will carry the bag for free.

Best of luck with that one. But a cautionary tale would be to read about a few trials that did not go well for those participating, such as the one at Northwick Park Hospital in 2006 (see this story on the BBC website: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/4807042.stm). It is something I considered at a student, but I found that there was a stong link between risk and reward - the higher the pay, the higher the risk !

A holiday is a chance to recharge your batteries by enjoying a change of scenery and routine. You can immerse yourself in a different culture, enjoy new foods, see new things, meet new people, do something you've never tried before or something worthwhile (a charity project perhaps), visit long lost friends and family, go shopping, top up your tan, or just sleep for a week! You've earned the time and, if your boss realises what a great job you do whist you are away, you might be able to get a pay rise when your return !

One word - WALK. Put on some comfortable shoes or walking boots, map out a route and see the sights on foot. Too many people hop on a bus, which is expensive and you miss so much, or take the Tube from one 'sight' to another. Start at Victoria, go around the corner to Buckingham Palace, along the side of St James' Park to Horseguards, then just up the road to Westeminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben. Look across the river at the London Eye, then walk up Whitehall - past Downing Street and the other side of Horseguards - to Trafalfar Square. Sit and chill or spend time in the National Portrait Gallery and / or National Galley, then head to Covent Garden to watch the buskers or visit the London Transport Museum or have a beer and a bite, then on to Leicester Square and China Town. You can easily do this in an afternoon (excluding the galleries) and will get a much better feel of the city than from a bus.
